In the United States, the JKA has been active since the early 1960s, led by pioneering instructors like SENSEI TAKAYUKI MIKAMI, who brought traditional karate directly from Japan to American dojos. The JKA organization continues to support a network of affiliated dojos across the country, offering instruction, testing and international training opportunities. These efforts ensure the same level of discipline and technical precise precision found in Japan is preserved here in the United States of America”.

What is shotokan karate

Shotokan karate is a traditional Japanese martial art that emphasizes striking techniques, including punches, kicks, knee strikes, and open-hand techniques. It was developed in the early 20th century by Gichin Funakoshi, who is often regarded as the father of modern karate. The term "Shotokan" derives from "Shoto," which was Funakoshi's pen name, and "kan," meaning hall, reflecting the place where the art was taught.

Key characteristics of Shotokan karate include:
1. Stances: Strong and stable stances, such as zenkutsu dachi (front stance) and kokutsu dachi (back stance), are fundamental to the techniques.
2. Kata: Pre-arranged forms or patterns of movements that simulate combat scenarios. Kata training helps practitioners develop precision, timing, and spirit.
3. Kumite: Sparring practice, which allows karateka (karate practitioners) to apply techniques in a controlled or competitive setting.
4. Philosophy: Shotokan emphasizes respect, discipline, and self-improvement, with a strong focus on mental training in addition to physical skill.

Shotokan karate is practiced around the world and is known for its effectiveness in self-defense as well as its competitive aspects in tournaments.
